Introduction More than half of all new infections with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) globally as well as in the United States (US) occur among people under age 25 (UNAIDS, 2004; Advocates for Youth, 2003). Within the United States, African-American youth are at particularly heightened risk for HIV infection, comprising an estimated 56% of all AIDS cases ever reported between those 13 to 24 years of age (CDC, 2005a), while African Americans encompass only 12.3% of the US population (CDC, 2005b). Heterosexual transmission is the most prevalent mode of HIV infection worldwide (UNAIDS, 2004) as well as among African-American females; it is the second most common mode of transmission among African-American males (CDC, 2005b). Interest in the relationship between perceptions of culturally defined gender roles and norms and HIV-related risk behavior among adolescents has increased as the prevalence of HIV and the rates of heterosexual transmission have escalated among youth both within the United States and globally.
